Silves Castle, one of the most popular Algarve attractions in 2014

As we have previously discussed, it is known that the Algarve is so much more than a simple seaside attraction, with its 300 days of sun and the lure of the Atlantic Ocean. People come here to play golf, to do business, but also for cultural enrichment. Many of them choose to visit Silves Castle, one of the most popular Algarve attractions in 2014.

According to the local council, the medieval Castle of Silves, an architectural gem indeed, received 10.000 visitors more than in the previous year in 2014. This means it was visited by a total of almost 205.000 people from Portugal and abroad.

The beautiful Silves Castle is one of the best preserved buildings from the Moorish period in Portugal. Built between the 8th and the 13th century Umayyad Caliphate. Throughout the entire middle age, the castle passed from Muslim hands to Christian influence and back, until Silves was finally restored to the Portuguese, along with the castle.
The Castle of Silves has been a National Monument since 1910. Its architecture is impressive indeed and, as previously mentioned, very well preserved. The Castle itself is perched on a hilltop, a construction the shape of an irregular polygon with 7 posts and 4 towers, all surrounded by thick walls. Circular arch-ways and columns farther remind of the Moorish style. The interior is made up of 2 hall ways with painted walls, there are arms and military trophies to admire, along with the remains of a medieval home.

The Castle of Silves can be visited every day of the year (except for Christmas and the New Year’s Day) from 9 to 17:30 and the admission fee is very low.

To visit the Algarve, you can rent a car in Lagos or book a Faro airport transfer to benefit from the best transport options available.
