Algarve destinations – Almancil guide
Almancil town is part of the Loule district and close-by to Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Largo. The region formed by the three places is called the Golden Triangle because it is one of the most expensive areas of the region, but there’s an interesting paradox at work here. Houses can sell for well into the millions however Almancil appears to have been forgotten by the tourism industry, but that is not necessarily for the worst.
The village does feature a great 18th century church located on the outskirts and it is features on many postcards because of its spectacularly hand painted tile interior as well as its hand carved wooden gilded altar. The church does have an entry charge and it does not allow the use of cameras, however the local faithful still use it and you might be lucky to witness a wedding or a christening taking place, in which case the main door will remain open and there will be no entry fee.
Almancil is mostly made up of one long street, there are some others of course, but this is the main part of town, where you’ll find a lot of great restaurants as well as a plethora of interesting shops which deal in a variety of merchandise from antiques and interior design to an English book shop.
The surroundings of Almancil are also dotted with interesting shops, especially the back road that leads toward Quarteira. There one particular layby where there’s a picnic area that features an old water nora which donkeys used to circle endlessly in order to draw up water in older times. That is however not what makes it special, the hand painted tiles that decorate the layby offer a great look into how life was in older days.
