This is something well-known by those who are in the know, but it’s always good to know that Algarve beaches are continually appreciated by those who visit them.

For those of you who are new to the knowledge of the existence of the Algarve, we thought to make an article right at the beginning of the year to start you off with a basic idea of what the region of the Algarve is all about, before you dive into some of our other articles about different destinations in the region.

We’ve talked about, and most likely we’ll continue to talk about the wonderful weather, beaches and culture of the Algarve in the future, but today we’ll focus on things that are less obvious, although just as popular once you get there.

Portimão guide

Portimao guide - Praia da Rocha

Being the largest town in the western part of the Algarve, the town of Portimao, Portugal is located on the bank of the Arade river and faces Ferragudo on the opposite bank. What used to be the town’s beach on the Atlantic, Praia da Rocha, developed so much that it became pretty much a resort in its own right, featuring a plethora of accommodation options, restaurants and everything else that you might expect from a seaside resort town. However we won’t spend time talking about that here, instead we’ll try to offer you a basic Portimao guide, so that you know what you can expect.

The majority of the town is made up of late 19th and early 20th century buildings, when we’re talking about the older part of town, while the rest of Portimao is made up of modern apartment blocks in a variety of colors, hues and shades. It is interesting to note however that most settlements in the region have much longer histories, Portimao is a rather young place that managed to develop despite being surrounded by older towns. You can quickly get here by using some Portimao transfers from Faro Airport.

Praia da Rocha – Great beach and wonderful scenery at the second-largest Algarve resort

Praia-da-rocha-Portimao

The Portuguese resort town of Praia da Rocha is located on the west side of the Algarve, at about a fifty minute drive from Faro Airport and situated rather nicely between Alvor and Portimao.

What started as a quiet and very elegant resort back in the 1930s only started to develop at a major rate once cheaper flights started to be offered in the 1970s, which in turn spurred on a boom in apartments being built, and steadily and surely Praia da Rocha became the region’s second-largest resort town.

There are basically two types of travelers in the world: those who haven’t been to the Algarve yet, and those who return there year after year, but what exactly makes the latter do this?
