One of the most beloved cities in the sunny happy Algarve, Portugal is Portimao, by the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The entire Portimao will go out on the streets to celebrate Os Santos Populares in June. The holiday, similar to the Feast of all Saints – popular throughout the world – is a blend of religious and laic elements. The city will be decorated, there will be food (especially fish) and countless parades, dance, colour and music.
Between 26-28 June 2014, you may take part in O FOrA – Festival da Oralidade do Algarve – a show that celebrates the oral tradition in the region. There will be folkloric music and traditional dances straight at the heart of Portimao and anybody is welcome to join in the fun.
If you love the theatre, you will find delight in Portimao, while on June 28th you are invited to Musica Mundi: Tango and more, presented by the Music Academy of Lagos.
In July, Portimao also hosts a great sporting event: WSBK Portimão 2014, a superbike world race that attracts thousands of sports fans annually. The winding dangerous track, full of blind corners in the midst of a spectacular scenery make for an awesome circuit.
Towards the end of July, on the 19th, a splendid events also takes place at the heart of Algarve: 11a Noite Europeia das Mariposas (The Night of Butterflies), when you are invited to take a nocturnal walk along Quinta d`A Rocha to see the night butterflies soar high up in the sky.
