Today we’ll be talking about Portimao tourist attraction, a subject that we haven’t really touched upon yet.

Portimao is one of the largest towns in the Algarve, alongside the likes of Olhao, or the capital Faro. As opposed to most other Algarve locations, Portimao does not get most of its revenue from tourism activities, instead it acts as more of a headquarters for those who want to visit the various nearby tourist resorts, however there are things to be done in Portimao as well.

On Tuesday, October 30, two old warships were purposely sunk, off the coast of Alvor, thus marking the beginning of the Ocean Revival project.

Four explosives were used to sink the Oliveira e Carmo corvette – a disused warship – while dozens of other boats, both commercial and private, filled with onlookers, observed from at least half-a-mile away. It took two minutes and twenty-one second to sink the old corvette, three miles off the coast, where a pioneering underwater museum will be created.

Sardine Festival Portimao

It’s a good thing that the Portimao Sardine Festival exists, otherwise this town would be nothing more than just another resort city.

The Portuguese town of Portimao is one of the many Algarve resorts that attract many millions of visitors each year. It is located on the southern coast of Portugal and offers a plethora of attractions and activities for its visitors thanks to the presence of the sea and such.

However we’ll be talking about one event that sets Portimao apart from the many other Algarve resorts, namely the Portimao Festival da Sardinha, or the Portimao Sardine Festival.

Portimão guide

Portimao guide - Praia da Rocha

Being the largest town in the western part of the Algarve, the town of Portimao, Portugal is located on the bank of the Arade river and faces Ferragudo on the opposite bank. What used to be the town’s beach on the Atlantic, Praia da Rocha, developed so much that it became pretty much a resort in its own right, featuring a plethora of accommodation options, restaurants and everything else that you might expect from a seaside resort town. However we won’t spend time talking about that here, instead we’ll try to offer you a basic Portimao guide, so that you know what you can expect.

The majority of the town is made up of late 19th and early 20th century buildings, when we’re talking about the older part of town, while the rest of Portimao is made up of modern apartment blocks in a variety of colors, hues and shades. It is interesting to note however that most settlements in the region have much longer histories, Portimao is a rather young place that managed to develop despite being surrounded by older towns. You can quickly get here by using some Portimao transfers from Faro Airport.
