Spanish destinations near Algarve

Most of the time friends, at times rivals, speaking similar Romance languages and having a common cultural background, the history of Portugal and that of Spain have always been entwined. Today, though separate states, the two countries are still usually assimilated one with the other, especially when tourism is concerned, so if you are planning a trip to Southern Portugal, you may find useful info here about Spanish destinations near Algarve.

For the usual tourist alighting in this side of Europe, Spain and Portugal are usually visited at the same time, in traditional circuit excursions. But even for the adventurous traveller who needs more independence and does not travel with a group, visiting both countries is the best choice.

From the Southern border of the Algarve, there are a few Spanish destinations that are most popular and that are relatively easily accessible from your lodgings in Portugal. You can also opt for a one-day excursion and be back towards the evening of the same day and the journey will certainly be worth the money and effort.

One of the closest destinations is Huelva. Set in the beautiful Andalusian region, the city is steeped in history, being established well before the Roman conquest as a maritime center. Modern Huelva boasts with Recreativo de Huelva, the oldest football club in Spain.

Another popular place to go in Spain, really near the border, is Lepe, which has a famous extensive beach called La Antilla, and which is a wonderful tourist objective due to its architecture and history. Among many others, you can admire the 14th-century Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Torre del Catalán, built in the 16th century as defense against the Berber pirates.

The last destination we’ll  talk about for now is Punta Umbria, another seaside resort worth visiting. Travelling to this or any of the other destinations is a simple option with an Algarve transfer.
