We haven’t looked at some Algarve destinations in a while so today we’ll offer a short Alcantarilha guide in our series of general guide articles.

This used to be a small village but it has grown quite a bit during the past ten years thanks to EN125 running through it. In the old part of the village very little has changed, it still features the very particular narrow lanes and a main street that runs the length of the village, growing narrower near the rather impressive church where it’s only a car’s width.

Even though there’s been this constant mantra-like line going about the Algarve in recent times of “there is no money”, it appears that the Algarve coastline is set to receive a major 5.4 million Euro face-lift as part of a whopping 200 million Euro that will be spent on the entire country’s coastline.

Algarve tour bus featuring a massive ‘Algarve’ sign will be setting off on a tour of Spain where it will hold workshops in several important cities with the goal of increasing or creating interest and attracting Spanish visitors to the region outside of the peak-season.

A recent study has found that 86% of Portuguese opted to spend their holidays in Portugal in 2013, in places not that far from where they live.

September 16th saw the start of an interesting tourism project in Tavira, lead by a consortium established between the owner of the Pedras d’el Rei resort and the University of the Algarve.




Algarve wines getting attention in the UK

It would appear that the new Algarve wines from the Douro Valley are starting to make a name for themselves in the United Kingdom.

We’re referring to the new white wines from the region, because the region is most famously known for being a producer of Port wine – a fortified red wine.
