Driving through the Algarve, a road trip idea
Did you think road trips only existed in American novels? Well, no, one of the perks of globalization is that we find every theme everywhere, so these vacationing options have become popular in Europe – and by default in Portugal – as well. Here’s to driving through the Algarve, a road trip idea.
The first thing you need is a car. While you can opt for a Faro transfer or an Albufeira transfer if you feel like getting a tour, you can also rent a car from Faro Airport with Air Auto Car Rental if you need more space and freedom – then there’s just you and the road.
So let’s get going! If you start your journey in Lagos, you will get the chance to visit an amazing typically littoral Portuguese city. You can go for an hour of sunbathing, but you can also have lunch in town or wander through the historical center, pray in the 18th century Igreja de Santo Antonio or visit the Marina.
Next stop: Sagres! (Un)justly called “the End of the World”, this quiet surf little town is an amazing haven with cerulean waters bordered by dramatic cliffs and the endless blue skies. No umbrellas or chairs are featured on the beach and the resort lacks restaurants and the lush of the bigger towns, but it is an amazing place to rest and charge your batteries.
If you have the time, you can also stop by Salema, an old fishing village, a traditional timeless little town with a beautiful beach. You might meet the fishermen here and learn a bit about their trade.
Then you are on the road again, heading towards Vila de Bispo with its beautiful white church with the amazing azuleojos, the last stop for the day. You have all chances of finding cheaper and more rustic lodgings here or in the surrounding area, as you prepare to hit the road the next day!
