What is Mama Maratona you ask? It’s a walk/race organized to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer, and it’s an event that will be returning to the Portimao riverside area on the 13th of October.

The Algarve Oncology Association is organizing the event with the aim to raise the awareness of the local population about cancer as well as the need to lead a healthier lifestyle in general.

The event is part of the international ‘Pink October’ movement and all of the proceeds resulting from it will go to help towards the construction of a temporary residence for cancer patients who are under treatment at the Faro Radiotherapy Unit.

This will be 13th year in which the Mama Maratona is organized, and during this time it has become one of the main events in the region’s athletics clandera, several medal winners taking part in this year’s run such as: Ana Cabecinha, Ana Dias, Elly van Hulst, Helder Costa, Antonio Fortunato, Antonia Silva, Carlos Cabral and Ezequiel Canario.

The walk/race will start at 10AM when participants will be asked to gather along the riverside area of Portimao, near the old fish auction house or Antiga Lota. The course varies from between 5 kilometers and 8 kilometers, while there’s also a ‘Mini-Maratona’ as well as the 2nd Half-Mama Maratona, meant to be ran by professional athletes which covers 10 and 21 kilometers respectively.

Those interested in participating will have to pre-register via www.aalgarve.org and costs 5 Euros – or 15 if done on the day of the race, and 7.5 Euro – or 20 on the day. All participants will be receiving a t-shirt, hat, a running vest as well as promotional material.

The cost for adults is 5 Euro and 3 Euro for children – and this will include all of the items we mentioned earlier.
