Faro Airport tests new security system

Faro Airport is one of three European airports chosen to test-run a state-of-the-art security system meant to bring together and supervise all component of airport security, with the goal of maximizing the ability to respond in real time, in case a possible threat is detected.

It is not yet totally known if the system will be implemented, but if it is, then it will be a four-year project in which the effects on airport security for passengers will be closely looked at.

In order to properly implement the project, it will cost fourteen million Euro and it will be done with backing from the EU which will finance 9 of the 14 million.

The system is described as being a “multi-level multi-intelligence and surveillance system” aimed at creating a very comprehensive airport security solution. Bearing the name of Total Airport Security System – TASS – the aim of the system is to provide real-time situational awareness of all airport facilities as well as its surroundings.

The idea for the project came from the fact that airport security is becoming increasingly expensive for EU states because airports have become major targets for possible attacks, so there is a need for good airport security considering the growing threat. At least this is the gist of what Isabel Oliveira – Portuguese airport management company ANA’s head of Investment – had to say.

The TASS will bring together eight major aspects of airport security control, namely: people, facilities, airplanes, baggage, cargo, vehicles, environment and cyberspace; the aim being to combine all of these in order to find correlations and anomalies in real time.

This updated information can then be shared among the various airport security authorities who will assess and determine the best ways to act in response to a potential thread.

Faro Airport is very popular especially during the summer season when it sees a lot of flights from the rest of the European continent, it makes sense for it to be a subject for testing this new system.
