Algarve is a top surfing destination
There is one aspect of the Algarve that we haven’t talked about that much on our site and that is the fact that the Algarve is a top surfing destination, a record-breaking one actually, but more on that later.
The Algarve coastline, which is a massive magnet for people looking for fun and sun, is an equally large magnet for those who prefer to surf the waves as opposed to the Internet.
Just like the Algarve in general has many attractions for a lot of types of tourist so does its coastline. The waters around the Algarve can accommodate all levels of surfing.
Considering that the Algarve is bathed in the Atlantic there’s always a swell somewhere, so down-time won’t necessarily be an issue. There is also a wide range of accommodations to choose from, depending on one’s budget, not to mention some of the best food and seafood that you’ll ever get to eat.
The region is very tourist active as it is, so this means that you can easily find flights straight to Faro airport – located in the ‘capital’ of the region. Getting some gear won’t be a problem either thanks to the large number of surf schools or surfing holiday packages on offer.
Depending on your level of expertise you’ll want to choose one destination over another. For instance beginners will want to head for places like Praia da Falesia for instance, generally in the center of the Algarve. The more eastwards you go the smaller the waves become.
The towns of Lagos and Sagres are very popular with surfers who flock here not only for their favorite activity but also because of the generally laid back atmosphere.
We mentioned a broken record earlier, this happened in 2011 when Garrett McNamara set a world record for successfully riding a massive 90ft wave off the Portuguese coast.
