Algarve in the off-season – September and October
People don’t talk about Algarve in the off-season as much as they should, I mean we did talk about Algarve in the winter season a while back, but that only scratches the surface of the great experience that one will have if they go to the Algarve in the off-season.
Actually the months of September and October are some of the best months to visit the Algarve – because during these months the average temperatures tend to hover around the mid to high 20’s, in the shade, so it will still be hot by pretty much most standards.
Faro tourist attractions
We’ve talked in general about Faro a while back, but today we’ll focus a bit more on some of the many Faro tourist attractions that you can enjoy while on your trip there.
One of the best starting places for a tour of the entire city is in fact an attraction in itself, the Praca de Dom Francisco Gomes features an obelisk erected in 1910 which commemorates the diplomat Ferreira d’Almeida, an important figure in Faro’s history.
Algarve food and drink – the Algarve coast
Algarve food and drink varies, as one might expect, from region to region, and there are three distinct culinary regions in the Algarve: there’s the coastal region, the plains of the “Barrocal” region and the hills.
Each region’s particular activities, such as fishing, livestock breeding and agriculture are quite possibly the most direct influence on what the local inhabitants eat and drink, and as such have allowed for the development of specific gastronomic tastes.
Silves attractions – Silves castle
The Algarve town of Silves is one place that maybe not so many have heard about, it is quite well-known to those who have already been to the region, but for those who think of the Algarve as just great beaches and coastal resorts, the Silves attractions are there to provide some nice contrast.
As opposed to most other potential visiting places that you’ll find in the Algarve, Silves is set on the banks of the Arade River, a charming town peppered with orange and lemon trees and deeply steeped in history.
Ria Formosa Nature Reserve
The Ria Formosa Nature Reserve is a lagoon, located in the Eastern Algarve, a wonderful landscape that stretches from Faro to the village of Cacela Velha near Tavira.
The Lagoon is made up of a system of barrier islands that communicates with the sea via six inlets, and it was created in 1755 by the last great oceanic earthquake. Due to tidal changes, the sand dunes, islands and bars that make up the lagoon are always in a constant state of change, what does not change however, are the archaeological sites that show remains of Roman and pre-Roman settlements.
4×4 Algarve tours
One unique way of experiencing the Algarve is with the help of 4×4 Algarve tours. That might seem weird at first glance because for the majority of people the Algarve is characterized by its wonderfully long and soft golden beaches, and for most of visitors, their visit never amounts to more than just lounging around their hotel and the closest beach. And there absolutely nothing wrong with that, but the thing is that there is so much more to the Algarve than some of the best beaches in Europe.
