The Loule carnival – about which we talked a while back – is ready to start tomorrow on the 9th of February and fill the entire municipality with fun and entertainment.

This year’s Loule carnival will be socio-politically themed, “Troikered – The big circus” is its theme and the main Jose da Costa Mealha avenue will be the main staging ground for the floats and fun.

The Loule carnival is one of the oldest such events in Portugal and last year it saw somewhere around sixty thousand visitors during its three days. This year’s carnival will feature seventeen floats and hundreds of dancers and entertainers from samba schools and much more of course.

As has been the case with previous years, the revenue from the ticket sales will be donated to a local charity, so everything stays in Loule. The tickets will cost 2 Euro per person per day to gain access to the main avenue where the parade will start in each of the days from 3PM.

The public is encouraged to get into the spirit of the carnival and to either make or rent fancy dress costumes from the Loule town hall collection. Renting costs are just twelve Euros per costume from a store situated in Loule’s historic city centre that will be open in each of the carnival days, except for the 12th.

But of course it wouldn’t be a carnival with just a parade every day, so the town hall has also organized several themed balls and parties alongside sporting and cultural events all throughout the municipality, so that as many people as possible can get involved in the fun. For instance, at 10PM on the 9th of February, the NERA building will host a carnival party with live music and the theme will be ‘Wonderland’ as envisioned in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” – tickets priced at 5 Euro per person.

So if you’re already in the region, use some Algarve car rental services to get a rental car and head on there to see what the whole thing is like.

The Loule Carnival is by far amongst the biggest events across the Algarve, it is definitely the biggest in Loule and the oldest in the region.

The Loule Carnival is by far amongst the biggest events across the Algarve, it is definitely the biggest in Loule and the oldest in the region. It usually takes place in February over the course of three days – the third day being Shrove Tuesday and it’s a wonderfully colorful and noisy affair with music, dancing and all-around revelry.

It is reminiscent to a certain extend with the much more famous Brasilian carnivals, with people from all over the region coming to Loule to watch the procession and join in with the festivities in the center streets. In fact the city centre is closed off for the duration of the festivities, entrance to the area costing a few Euros.

The Loule carnival theme for 2013 has just been announced – the theme will once again focus on the ongoing financial woes that the country is going through, the title being “Stuck with the Troika – what a circus”.

This year the Carnival will be held on the 9, 10 and 12 February and it will go along the main Jose da Costa Mealha Avenue.

2013’s theme will continue the satire that visitors have become accustomed with, and the parade will start at 3Pm on each of the three days and will include seventeen decorated floats, as well as entertainers, samba dancers from the various samba schools and stilt walkers.

Complementing the parade, the Loule Town Hall has also announced that it will be organizing several themed balls and parties, as well as other sporting and cultural events all throughout the municipality.

This year especially the organizers are looking to highlight the Carnival not only from the tradition point of view among the local population, but also for its massive touristic component. The Carnival is after all one of the most important events in the region during the winter low season, and considering what we reported just yesterday, it is vitally important for the local economy.

Tickets for the main avenue will cost two Euros per person per day.

Keep in mind that you can visit the Carnival if even you’re not in Loule with the help of our Algarve car rental services.
